As members of Al-Anon Family Groups in our communities, many of us may be going to upcoming Al-Anon Assemblies, Conventions and Regional Service Seminars. As you go, you may have the opportunity to share information about what is happening as we use the tool of our computers to share our recovery experience, strength and hope. Here are some facts that may help you carry the message.
1. In January 1996, the Board of Trustees for the Al-Anon Family Groups, Inc. appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on the Internet which authorized a 3-year pilot project to list [not register] on-line meetings as the Board studied the impact of the internet on Al-Anon as a whole. This pilot project has been continued as the Board continues to look at how On-Line Al-Anon fits into the service structure.
2. In January 1998, while representatives from known OLA meetings were planning for participation at the Salt Lake International, an On-line AL-Anon Information Service website was developed to provide a service of letting people with computers find Al-Anon meetings which were listed at the World Service Office.
3. Meetings, listed at WSO have been invited to be part of the OLA-IS website. Currently there are eleven (11) email meetings and seven (7) chat meetings that may be contacted by going to the OLA-IS site www.ola-is.org.
4. Persons seeking information may go to the site [www.ola-is.org] maintained by the OLA meetings it serves, or by writing to WSO at WSO@al-anon.org.
5. While the OLA-IS site has not yet been given official status as part of the Al-Anon service structure, the Trusted Servants of OLA-IS are continuing to work with WSO to be in harmony with the emerging policy. WSO has suggested that OLA do Public Information to help make the presence of Al-Anon via personal computers known to the world-wide fellowship. Thus, you can help by passing on the website address of www.ola-is.org.
6. Some of us have printed out HUG messages with the following information:
